Dr Stephen McQuaid

A native of Northern Ireland and graduate of Queens University Belfast, Dr McQuaid started his career as a research assistant in Neuropathology at QUB. He worked with a team led by Professor Dame Ingrid Allen on various CNS diseases including multiple sclerosis and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

From 1990 he has worked as a principal clinical scientist in Tissue Pathology at the Royal Hospitals Trust, Belfast. During this time, he set up and managed the wide range of immunocytochemical tests that are now used in diagnostic Neuropathology. He gained his MSc at QUB in 1991 for research into the optimization of non-radioactive in situ hybridization techniques and was awarded his PhD by QUB, for research into the neuropathogenesis of measles virus, in 1998.
